# Read Where a Decision Comes From

> Each line on Today shows where it came from: the regulation, the model, or the device.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Find the line under the sentence">
    Under each decision, in small type next to an information mark, is where it came from. A closed period names the regulation, a window names the model and its inputs, and a reading names the device.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap the source">
    The regulation opens on gov.uk. A model opens its card on the field with the inputs it used. A device opens its page with the last reading.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check measured or modelled">
    A number worked out by the app says **modelled** and names the model. A number read by a device says **measured** and names the device and the time.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What You See Next

Every line on Today can be traced back this way. If a line says modelled and you would rather have it measured, [Is a Probe Worth It Here](/how-do-i/sensors/is-a-probe-worth-it-here) tells you whether a sensor would change the number.

## If It Does Not

| You see                               | It means                                 | Do                                             |
| ------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| The source says "nation not stated" | The nation is missing | More, Settings, the farm, then the nation |
| The model names a field with no probe | The reading is modelled from public data | That is the honest answer; a probe replaces it |
